Cobalt and Nickel
all over the world.

ICoNiChem is an expert in transition metal chemistry specialising in cobalt and nickel compounds made from 100% ethically source feedstocks to modern industries across the globe.

Who We Are

Born out of The Shepherd Chemical Company, ICoNiChem Widnes Ltd was created by an amicable divestiture from Shepherd in August 2016 by GIL (Grove Investments Ltd). On 9th December 2020 the shareholders of ICoNiChem Group Limited agreed to accept an unsolicited offer for the sale of the entire share capital of ICoNiChem Group Limited to 6 members of the Cengiz family who are based in Turkey, in equal share. The site continues to produce inorganic salts of Cobalt and Nickel here in the North West of England trading as ICoNiChem Widnes Ltd.

Our track record of value creation and world class customer service continues uninterrupted and has made us a trusted partner in the industry for more than 40 years.

In collaboration with our customers, our mission is to grow our specialty chemical business based on quality and manufacturing excellence using 100% ethically sourced raw materials. In this collaboration we will provide consumers with products using sustainable transition metal compounds developed by a compact focused organisation, which bring real benefits to people in a modern world.

History
1970’s and 1980’s
Our current Moss Bank Road production facility was created by Chemcat in the late 1970s. The original product offering included cobalt products together with manganese nitrate and Raney nickel for catalysts.
1970’s and 1980’s
1990’s
The Shepherd Chemical Company acquired the site in June 1995 and developed it to supply intermediate products to the Shepherd Group of companies and external customers. The business continued to trade under the Chemcat name until it was rebranded as Shepherd Widnes Ltd in 1998 following ISO 9001 accreditation.
1990’s
2001 to 2015
Shepherd continued to grow both in the US and here in Widnes during both buoyant and challenging economic cycles. Product sales continued to increase and Shepherd identified opportunity for further development in the US and other global markets. To maximise the benefit to both the Widnes location and Shepherd Chemical in the US the Shepherd Group agreed to an amicable divestiture of the Widnes Facility.
2001 to 2015
2016 to 2020
In August 2016 GIL Investments Ltd acquired Shepherd Widnes and has since made significant improvements to its processing capabilities.

2021 to Date

After the acquisition of the site on 9th December 2020 by the new Turkish owners, the shareholders and directors have developed a significant investment plan to grow the business for current products whilst developing new offerings which diversify into other transition metal chemistry.

ICoNiChem is looking to both downstream and upstream operations to enhance the value that the business has to offer.

The onsite management team, quality team, production, R&D and production processes all remain unchanged with an increased focus on investment to increase capacity growth and production capabilities of the site for the future.
